Charleston Today & Ahead: What’s Happening in the City

Hey Charleston, it’s Mason Williams here with a roundup of happenings today and upcoming events you won’t want to miss across the Holy City.

Today’s Highlights

Second Sunday on King — If you’re free this afternoon, head downtown for King Street’s monthly take over. From 1–5 PM, vehicles are blocked off and the street is full of live music, shopping and local fare. A perfect way to wander and enjoy what Charleston offers. This happens on the 2nd Sunday of each month.

Charleston City Market & Sweetgrass Basket Weavers — Open daily, this historic market is a must for handmade art, local crafts, and flavorful food. Great if you want something the whole family can enjoy.

Upcoming Events Worth Marking

MOJA Arts Festival – September 24 through October 1. A citywide celebration of Black and Caribbean art, storytelling, live performances in parks and theaters. Many events are free.

Fall Tours of Homes, History & Architecture – Takes place in the fall across downtown Charleston. A chance to peek inside private historic homes, lush gardens, and see parts of the city most don’t often visit.

Charleston Jazz Festival — Running April 2027, this festival brings jazz performances to a range of iconic Charleston venues. If you like music that moves your soul, this is your event.

Charleston Wine + Food Festival — Scheduled for March 3–7, 2027. A five-day culinary celebration across the city, featuring tastings, chef lunches and dinners spotlighting the Lowcountry flavor. Perfect for food lovers and culinary adventurers.

Tips for Planning Ahead

  • Book early. Hotels fill up fast during MOJA, the Wine + Food Festival, and other signature events. Downtown rooms double in price on festival weekends.
  • Check ticketed vs. free events. Many events have a mix; seeing performances downtown may involve tickets whereas outdoor events like parades or Art in the Park are often free.
  • Stay flexible. Charleston’s climate and battery of events mean schedules change. Always double-check times, venues and weather, especially for outdoor shows.

That’s a snapshot of what’s happening now and what to look forward to. Want more venue-specific picks (live music, theater etc.) or events in your neighborhood? I’ve got you—just say the word.
